16 December, 2023 - 16 December, 2023

Hybrid Lecture:

Functional Nanomaterials – Tuning the Size and Surface Chemistry for Applications in Renewable Energy Technologies, Biomedical and Environmental Sciences

Facilitator:

Prof. Dr. Irshad Hussain

Department of Chemistry & Chemical Engineering, Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE), Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS)

INTRODUCTION:

The Sindh Innovation, Research, and Education Network (SIREN) working under the auspices of the Government of Sindh, and the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS) is organizing a lecture entitled, “Functional Nanomaterials – Tuning the Size and Surface Chemistry for Applications in Renewable Energy Technologies, Biomedical and Environmental Sciences”. All research scholars, student scientists, and faculty of universities are cordially invited to attend this important lecture.

ABSTRACT:

The unique chemical and physical properties of nanoscale materials have triggered much scientific interest to explore their potential applications in biomedical sciences, energy technologies, agriculture, environment, catalysis and industry, etc. The chemical and physical properties of metal/ metal oxide nanoparticles can generally be tuned by controlling their size, shape and surface chemistry. This talk would, therefore, be an overview of interdisciplinary research activities of Functional Nanomaterials Group at LUMS to synthesize customized inorganic/organic nanoparticles with tunable size and surface chemistry, and their composites having unique chemical and physical properties, and subsequent applications in biomedical sciences, environment, catalysis and renewable energy technologies.

ABOUT THE FACILITATOR:

Prof. Dr. Irshad Hussain is among the founding members of SBA School of Science & Engineering (SBASSE), LUMS; and has led the Chemistry department during its formative years, which has now been upgraded to the Department of Chemistry & Chemical Engineering. He completed M.Sc. in Chemistry from Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad; and PhD (Chemistry, Nanomaterials) from the University of Liverpool, UK. He has published over 150 research articles in prominent journals including Nature Materials, Science Advances, Nature Communications, Chemical Society Reviews, etc. Dr. Hussain has developed several effective research collaborations with the leading nanomaterials groups in USA, Europe, China, Saudi Arabia (KAUST), and several National Institutions in Pakistan.

Dr. Hussain has served as the Chair of National Nanotech Experts Panel at Pakistan Council for Science & Technology in 2015 and as the member of the National Core Group of Chemistry and Chair of the National Core Group of Nanotechnology formed by the PM Task Force on Science & Technology (2020-2022). He has also been awarded 02 Gold Medals in Chemistry by Pakistan Academy of Sciences (PAS) in 2007 (Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman Gold Medal) and 2014 (PAS Gold Medal). Dr. Hussain is a Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC) and a Fellow of Pakistan Academy of Sciences.
