Lecture: Research, innovation and commercialization for knowledge-based economy
Speaker: Prof. Dr. Shahid Mansoor, S.I., Senior Advisor, International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS); HEC Distinguished National Professor; Fulbright Alumnus; Ex-Director, National Institute for Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (NIBGE)
INTRODUCTION:
The Sindh Innovation, Research, and Education Network (SIREN) working under the auspices of the Government of Sindh, and the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS) is organizing a lecture entitled, “Research, innovation and commercialization for knowledge-based economy”. Research scholars, students, scientists, professionals, and faculty of SIREN-affiliated universities are cordially invited to attend this important lecture.
ABSTRACT:
The reforms in higher education in Pakistan
have increased the number of universities, enrollment, and highly trained
faculty. As a result, Pakistan is among the top countries in research output in
terms of number of research publications per million population. However, the
performance of Pakistan in the global innovation index is dismal and shows the
disconnect between higher education, innovation and knowledge-based economy. In
several emerging economies a package of incentives and policy reforms have
played a key role in their development. Thus, there is a need to create
awareness among faculty and students about innovation and commercialization
that can lead to economic growth. The ICCBS has one of the best faculty and
infrastructure that can play a key role, and emerge as a role model in several
areas of the economy by adopting key policy reforms and performance indicators.
The presentation will cover the concept of the global innovation index and some
recent examples of how collective wisdom and interactions with stakeholders can
lead to the mainstreaming of research efforts with national needs. The
presentation will also suggest a road map and incentive package to engage
experienced and young minds with key stakeholders and create impact at national
and international levels.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Prof. Dr. Shahid Mansoor served as the Director of National Institute for Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (NIBGE) for over nine years. Dr. Mansoor has over 300 publications on his credit with a total impact factor of about 1800, h-index 59, i10 index 178 and over 14000 citations. He has mentored around 100 Ph.D. and M.Phil. students. He was awarded Sitara-e-Imtiaz in 2009. He was declared HEC Distinguished National Professor in 2014, and elected fellow of the Pakistan Academy of Sciences in the same year. Dr. Mansoor has done pioneering work on the discovery and evolution of geminivirus disease complexes and their interaction with host plants. He has worked extensively on the use of RNA silencing and its use in developing novel sources of resistance against plant viruses and insects. He has been recently working on next-generation sequencing technologies for understanding simple and complex genomes and developing genome editing tools. He has been promoting biotechnology as an engine for socio-economic development of Pakistan. At ICCBS, Dr. Mansoor will continue to follow his interests in genomics, genome editing and genetic engineering in industrial microbes, crops, and livestock. The major theme is the socio-economic development by biotechnology tools through collaboration with national and international partners.
