31 January, 2022 - 24 March, 2022
INTRODUCTION: The Sindh Innovation, Research, and Education Network (SIREN) working under the auspices of Government of Sindh and the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), is organizing a hybrid course entitled, “Single Crystal Structure Determination of Small Molecules by XRD.” In this two credit hours course, fundamental aspects of crystallography will be explained. Lectures on symmetry, space groups, X-ray scattering, and the determination of crystal structures will be delivered. Learning Objectives X-ray crystallography is applied in the determination of molecular structures of natural products, synthetic materials, organometallic compounds, and minerals in the solid-state. In this course, fundamental aspects of crystallography will be explained. Lectures on symmetry, space groups, X-ray scattering, and the determination of crystal structures will be delivered. The participating students will be required to download the latest programs used in XRD analysis. Several demonstrations to solve the crystal structures from XRD data using the soft-wares will be conducted in the class. Test data will be provided to each student as a part of a hands-on experience that will carry some credit. Tutorials will be held on Fridays to enhance the understanding of the course content. Quizzes will be held on Saturdays. An open book/lecture notes final examination will be held after the course to determine the final grade of the participants.
COURSE DELIVERY: This course is organized by the Sindh Innovation Research and Education Network (SIREN) and is coordinated by the Latif Ebrahim Jamal National Sciences Information Center, ICCBS, University of Karachi. It will be conducted on campus and online through Zoom Meeting.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND? This course is for Ph.D. students only.
INSTRUCTOR’S PROFILE: Prof. Dr. Masood Pervez : Prof. Dr. Masood Parvez provided X-ray crystallographic service in the Department of Chemistry at the Universities of Calgary, Canada, and Pennsylvania State, USA for over thirty years and trained highly qualified personnel to operate X-ray diffractometers and determine crystal structures of their compounds. Dr. Parvez has been one of the top 50 contributors (# 43) to the CSD base worldwide (2016). Dr. Parvez has been involved in the studies of the molecular structures of physiologically active compounds with anti-allergic activities and potential drug molecules. Dr. Parvez has contributed to the publication of over 800 research articles in refereed international journals. Published over 800 research articles in international journals. All the papers contain my contributions in the area of X-ray crystallography.
