06 January, 2022 - 06 January, 2022
INTRODUCTION: The Sindh Innovation, Research, and Education Network (SIREN), working under the auspices of Government of Sindh and International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), is organizing a workshop (hybrid) entitled, “Applications of Ionizing Radiation in Everyday Life its Hazards and Protection”. Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA) came into existence in 2001 as an independent regulatory body with the mission to protect radiation workers, general public and the environment from harmful effects of radiation. It has launched a Public Awareness Program on " Nuclear and Radiation Safety", for this; a seminar of one and half hour duration including questions & answers session is being conducted in different universities/institutes to aware students about merits and demerits of ionization radiation in everyday life and role of Regulatory Body in regulating nuclear & radiation facilities in Pakistan. In this regard, the talk on the topic of “Application of Ionizing Radiations in Everyday Life, Its Hazards & Means of Protection” will be conducted. In this presentation, the participants will be familiarized about naturally occurring and man-made ionizing radiation and their application in everyday life. Furthermore, the radiation hazards and methods of protection from ionizing radiations will be explained. Moreover, introduction to the PNRA, and its role and responsibilities in ensuring safety of radiation workers, general public, and environment will be elaborated.
Types and Sources of Radiations
Usefulness and Hazards of Radiations
PNRA (Roles and Responsibilities)
To provide comprehensive knowledge of all sources of ionizing radiation in your workplace, and the risks they pose.
To discuss about environmental exposure to natural radiation, and methods of protection from Ionizing radiations.
To aware students about merits and demerits of ionization radiation in everyday life.
To discuss the role of regulatory body in regulating nuclear & radiation facilities in Pakistan.
Ms. Maryam Shoaib:
She is working as a senior scientific officer in PNRA. She has done her MS in Medical Physics from Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS). Her area of working is radiation protection in medical facilities of Sindh and Baluchistan. She has been working with the projects of latest medical modalities, including radiotherapy, and isotope production like safety assessment of medical cyclotrons.
