INTRODUCTION:
The Sindh Innovation, Research, and Education Network (SIREN) working under the auspices of the Government of Sindh and the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS) are organizing a hybrid workshop entitled, “What is Self?” The category of self is one of the defining concepts in social sciences and humanities. It has incited philosophical explorations and ignited heated debates among sages and thinkers. One of the age-old questions is how do I know myself continues to spark interest in modern disciplines of cognitive sciences, anthropology, and psychology.
LEARNING OBJECTIVE:
To offer a conceptual understanding of self.
To present a historical representation of the category of the person.
To emphasize the imperative of self-knowledge in Sufi tradition.
By drawing on anthropological literature, the talk will present how the idea of the self reflects the changing modes of existence.
COURSE DELIVERY:
This workshop is organized by the Sindh Innovation Research and Education Network (SIREN) and is coordinated by the Latif Ebrahim Jamal National Sciences Information Center, ICCBS, University of Karachi. It will be conducted on campus and online through Zoom Meeting.
INSTRUCTOR’S PROFILE:
Dr. Noman Baig
Dr. Noman Baig is an Associate Professor of Anthropology, Director Interdisciplinary Research & Action Center (IDRAC) at the Habib University Karachi. He has obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. He teaches courses in social sciences and humanities. His primary research focuses on the convergence of material and spiritual worlds in Pakistan. He knows English, Urdu, Farsi, and Arabic.
